Why There Are Different Odds Formats

Sports betting is a global industry, and different regions developed their own ways of displaying odds. The UK popularised fractional odds, Europe and Australia adopted decimal odds, while the United States uses its own moneyline (American) format. Today's online bookmakers typically let you switch between all three — but understanding each one helps you make better betting decisions regardless of where you're betting or which market you're looking at.

Decimal Odds

Decimal odds are the most straightforward format and are the default on most European and international betting sites. The number represents your total return per unit staked, including your original stake.

  • Odds of 2.00 mean you get £2 back for every £1 staked — a profit of £1.
  • Odds of 3.50 mean you get £3.50 back for every £1 staked — a profit of £2.50.
  • Odds of 1.40 mean you get £1.40 back for every £1 staked — a profit of £0.40.

Formula: Profit = (Stake × Decimal Odds) − Stake

Decimal odds below 2.00 represent favourites; above 2.00 are underdogs. Odds of exactly 2.00 are "evens."

Fractional Odds

Fractional odds are the traditional UK format, still widely used in horse racing markets. The fraction tells you the profit relative to your stake.

  • 5/1 ("five to one"): Win £5 profit for every £1 staked. Total return = £6.
  • 2/1 ("two to one"): Win £2 for every £1 staked. Total return = £3.
  • 1/2 ("one to two" or "evens on"): Win £1 for every £2 staked — a short-priced favourite.

Formula: Profit = Stake × (Numerator ÷ Denominator)

American (Moneyline) Odds

American odds use a plus or minus system based around a $100 unit:

  • Positive odds (+200): Shows how much profit you'd make on a $100 bet. +200 means $200 profit on $100 staked.
  • Negative odds (−150): Shows how much you need to stake to win $100 profit. −150 means stake $150 to win $100.

Favourites carry negative odds; underdogs carry positive odds.

Quick Comparison Table

Decimal Fractional American Implied Probability
1.501/2−20066.7%
2.001/1 (Evens)+10050.0%
3.002/1+20033.3%
4.003/1+30025.0%
6.005/1+50016.7%

Converting Between Formats

Most betting sites handle conversion automatically, but knowing the formulas is useful:

  • Fractional → Decimal: (Numerator ÷ Denominator) + 1. So 3/1 = 4.00 decimal.
  • Decimal → American (favourite): If decimal < 2.00: −(100 ÷ (decimal − 1)). If decimal ≥ 2.00: +(decimal − 1) × 100.
  • American → Decimal (positive): (American odds ÷ 100) + 1. So +300 = 4.00 decimal.

Which Format Should You Use?

Use whichever format you find easiest to interpret quickly. Many experienced bettors prefer decimal odds for their simplicity and ease of calculating value. The most important skill isn't the format you use — it's understanding the implied probability behind any odds you're looking at.
